What's Wrong with GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)? (Radio Interview 44 mins)

with Jeffrey Smith, Institute For Responsible Technology.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert foreign genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. Those genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. Although banned by food manufacturers in Europe and elsewhere, the FDA does not require any safety evaluations. Most Americans say they would not eat GMOs if labeled, but the U.S. does not require labeling. GMOs are not safe, but have been in the food supply since 1996 and are now present in the vast majority of processed foods in the US. In ths interview Jeffrey Smith discusses what is happening and the virtual absence of safety standards required before new GMOs are released into the food supply and the environment.

The World According to Monsanto (Video, Part 1, 11 mins)

Monsanto's controversial past combines some of the most toxic products ever sold with misleading reports, pressure tactics, collusion, and attempted corruption. They now race to genetically engineer (and patent) the world's food supply, which profoundly threatens our health, environment, and economy. Combining secret documents with first-hand accounts by victims, scientists, and politicians, this widely praised film exposes why Monsanto has become the world's poster child for malignant corporate influence in government and technology. A film by Marie-Monique Robin.

Seeds of Deception - Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating (Book)

By Jeffrey Smith, Institute for Responsible Technology
www.seedsofdeception.com

Seeds of Deception by Jeffery Smith

The international bestseller Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating, by Jeffrey M. Smith is a frightening expose of how unscrupulous bio-tech companies, like Monsanto, will stop at nothing to dominate the global food market.

Seeds of Deception includes accounts scientists offered bribes to support pro-GMO studies or threatened if they oppose any research, how government employees are harassed or fired and how the European Union successfully opposed having unlabeled genetically modified products in the food stream.

Although the European Union introduced legislation that food with more than 0.9% genetically modified content needs to be labeled for consumers, no such rules exist in North America.

The only way to ensure you are not ingesting genetically modified ingredients is to avoid the most common GMOs or consume organic food. However, as Smith reports 'Unless buyers ask for it, many organic food producers do not test for GMOs.'

In North America, if you are consuming corn, soy, canola or wearing cotton, you are coming into contact with genetically modified foods.

Biotech companies now dominate these crops. Although it doesn't stop there. All American milk, unless otherwise labeled, contains Monsanto's rbGH (bovine growth hormone); the rbGH is injected into cows to increase milk production. Smith writes that other modified crops include some US zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, and some tobacco.

Some genetically modified experiments that failed to take off include potatoes that created their own insecticide, tomatoes crossed with a cold water flounder engineered to resist frost, pigs that produce a human growth hormone, cotton that produces its own pesticide called Bt and a yeast to increase fermentation.

Even though there is a growing opposition from scientists and the public to genetically modified foods, Frankenfood giant Monsanto seems to have no intention of stopping until they control 100% of the world's food crop from seed to market.

Seeds of Deception is a riveting read for anyone who is concerned about the world's food security.

The World According to Monsanto (video 1hr 48mins)

A CBC film by Marie-Monique Robin, documents the devastating cost of Monsanto's race over the last decade to genetically engineer and patent the world's crops. Ms. Robin has traveled the globe in an effort to capture the human toll of Monsanto's drive for GMO market domination. Her interviews with scientists, legislators, agricultural officials, farmers, shepherds, and families affected by GMOs, has made this picture critically-acclaimed in every country where it has opened. On March 11 2080 a new documentary was aired on French television - a documentary that Americans won't ever see. The gigantic bio-tech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSANTO is an in-depth look at the domination of the agricultural industry from one of the world's most insidious and powerful companies. A bold, brilliant film and a definite must-see for anyone who is interested in learning more about the multi-billion dollar, omni-powerful, and highly dangerous Monsanto. No other filmmaker has ever created such a compelling and damning case against Monsanto. The only other individual to come close to exposing the ugly reality of Monsanto's contribution to the planet is best-selling author Jeffrey Smith with his book Seeds of Deception.

PAPER 19 STUDIES REVEAL: A new paper shows that consuming genetically modified (GM) corn or soybeans leads to significant organ disruptions in rats and mice, particularly in livers and kidneys. By reviewing data from 19 animal studies, Professor Gilles-Eric Sralini and others reveal that 9% of the measured parameters, including blood and urine biochemistry, organ weights, and microscopic analyses (histopathology), were significantly disrupted in the GM-fed animals. The kidneys of males fared the worst, with 43.5% of all the changes. The liver of females followed, with 30.8%. The report, published in Environmental Sciences Europe on March 1, 2011, confirms that several convergent data appear to indicate liver and kidney problems as end points of GMO diet effects. The authors point out that livers and kidneys are the major reactive organs in cases of chronic food toxicity. Other organs may be affected too, such as the heart and spleen, or blood cells, stated the paper. In fact some of the animals fed genetically modified organisms had altered body weights in at least one gender, which is a very good predictor of side effects in various organs. The abstract of the paper and link to free access download of the full paper follow:

Genetically modified crops safety assessments: present limits and possible improvements

Sralini G-E et al

Abstract

Purpose

We reviewed 19 studies of mammals fed with commercialized genetically modified soybean and maize which represent, per trait and plant, more than 80% of all environmental genetically modified organisms (GMOs) cultivated on a large scale, after they were modified to tolerate or produce a pesticide. We have also obtained the raw data of 90-day-long rat tests following court actions or official requests. The data obtained include biochemical blood and urine parameters of mammals eating GMOs with numerous organ weights and histopathology findings.

Methods

We have thoroughly reviewed these tests from a statistical and a biological point of view. Some of these tests used controversial protocols which are discussed and statistically significant results that were considered as not being biologically meaningful by regulatory authorities, thus raising the question of their interpretations.

Results

Several convergent data appear to indicate liver and kidney problems as end points of GMO diet effects in the above-mentioned experiments. This was confirmed by our meta-analysis of all the in vivo studies published, which revealed that the kidneys were particularly affected, concentrating 43.5% of all disrupted parameters in males, whereas the liver was more specifically disrupted in females (30.8% of all disrupted parameters).

Conclusions

The 90-day-long tests are insufficient to evaluate chronic toxicity, and the signs highlighted in the kidneys and livers could be the onset of chronic diseases. However, no minimal length for the tests is yet obligatory for any of the GMOs cultivated on a large scale, and this is socially unacceptable in terms of consumer health protection. We are suggesting that the studies should be improved and prolonged, as well as being made compulsory, and that the sexual hormones should be assessed too, and moreover, reproductive and multigenerational studies ought to be conducted too.
